Antzaat - The Black Hand of the Father

This Belgian black metal release was something i enjoyed from the get-go!

One simple reason for that is: My first imminent thought was when i put this on was
-Damn! This sounds soo much like Sargeists "Let the Devil in" ! and i love (well most of the songs) that album!

All from the guitar tone and notes played, vocal style and the overall atmosphere and delivery comes close to Sargeists  LtDi (not reaching the same soaring peaks of that album but that is a bit unfair to demand also)...so yeah total worship here but as i said i really cant stop to enjoy something that sounds like this hehe.Good satanic melodic flow!

But after some more spins their own more personal touches comes out and especially the last track i feel like Antzaat has hit its own mark. The last minute or so is really strong and epic, the more spoken/screamed and a bit darker vocals here gives it the final blazing star in the night sky! (Vocals here reminds me of the magical ending of Mephorashs latest album)

Production is ok & works well with no part drowning the other really but vocals and guitars sometimes could have been a bit higher in the mix but thats nit picking plus their logo is nice but i would not gotten interested in the band just seeing that...it does not give of much personality. The actual cover art is good though.

So in the end this is a well crafted debut Ep (5 songs) that is easy to listen to many times without losing any strength  even if its quite heavy on the Finnish worshipping (i am a sucker for that Country so...) it has its own merrits.
Look forward to their coming releases, could become very interesting.

Very easy to recommend for me.

Immatura Morte - Principium et Finis

This fourth album from Immatura Morte that is ruled by the Mexican demented wizard Besharth  lashes out right away with a both melodic and raw black metal attack!

I have followed this band for awhile now (from the second demo "Perditricem Sui Possessionem" to be more precise from 2015) and i am intoxicated and already knee-deep in enjoying  their sick journeys. If you are not to familiar with them(him and two others) its sounds has of course inspiration from the 90´s european darkness but has a lot of personal touches and soul, one of the main aspects of IM style besides the raw (medium raw i saw) and hatefull/melancholic melodic compositions is its vocals that ranges from the classic wretched screams and rasps but also has the deep gurgly demented mutterings and chantings...
it´s like you are wandering inside the halls of  a twisted mind and can never get out...so yeah it has sometimes that claustrophobic feeling to it also....and quite thunderous and grand. Enchanting black void!

Compare this new album with their other stuff i say this album leans more to the  energetic and aggresive, solid song constructions that is inspiring and wont leave your "system" after it ends.

The straightjacket is broke and the mad man is out hunting in a rage!

As of now i see this fourth album as their crowning satanic jewel!

...And if you are new to the band i think this is the good way to get into them.
Top release!

Putrid Torso - Grave Desecrating Ritual

This is old school Death metal just as it says on the cd cover!

The intro puts you in the right frame of mind with the sounds of someone digging (in a cemetery one can imagine) then some nice keys flow out then the moaning of the rising undead!

Tight production and instrumentalization hit you right away and it is chuggy and bloody, drooling and grand in its own deadly way. It has a quite European death metal sound with some clear Swedish influences (not that i am the biggest expert though) The compositions has a head banger friendly  & engaging rythms but also has a big chunk of danger in them (the spider alarm goes off! hehe). The dead ones is closing in, they hunger blindly after your warm flesh! Guitar is fat and nice sounding just as all of the other instruments and vocals is ugly and medium dark & bloody(growly.).

It plays out more or less in mid-tempo and each track has enough hooks and grooves to keep your rotting mind awake.A solid slab of traditional death metal to rangle your dusty bones to so dont come here and expect something new and fresh haha!

A debut album that let you know they mean business and that they are no newborn fetuses (members has been around for some time with different projects)

Also i had the honor to do some extra artworks inside the booklet as you see on the pics here under.

Amputacia S/T

From Russia with hate!

Here we have the debut release of Amputacia and it sounds really good! The cover did not say much to me on what to expect so i was pretty blank in my mind going in to this. (which is often a good state to be in when experience something new.)

Their brand of black metal is like a giant sluggish molded corpse dragging itself over the church floor onward to the worthless priest and strangle his head off! it is really dark and doomish but in a gnarly and disgusting way (and sometimes it picks up pace and is quite rockin), the dark harsh vocals and the pretty loud guitar is the main glory here even though the drums do its job just fine, i get a bit Swedish BM vibes here and there but as a whole it is pretty personal and it stands firmly on its two own iron legs.
I also get the feeling like you are clawing through the buried casket further down into the cold earth towards the hellish flames, hatefull and suffocating atmosphere.

Recommended debut!

Lotus of Darkness - The Naga Disguised as a Human

We all know there is a beauty in the darkness, a shard of black crystal that is so sharp it will slay every being in the most brilliant ways....

From Thailand comes Lotus of Darkness and they (at least on this release) play a beautiful and ethereal black metal. From the start i get strong vibes of early spiritual heavy metal...almost late 70´s style (there is some bands on the tip of my tongue for comparison but i cant seem to remember them now...) but also a rich layer of asian tunes is to be heard through out all three long songs.(between 6 to 14 minutes) So one could say it mixes or flips from the described style here above with the more blasting black metal fury reminiscent of the early European second wave....works like a charm! Vocals reminds also a bit of early Burzum with that complaining howls and screams.

Really enjoyable debut album with strong complete song structures and compositions through out this tape combined with such deep personal atmosphere...exotic is of course a fitting word to use makes this a no brainer to get!

One of this years best releases.

Vorus - Chamber of Laments

Time for a new death metal act to crawl into the scorching sunlight!

Vorus play in a mid tempo to a bit faster and it have a atmosphere of horror and dripping sewers, the guitar is headlighting the show with its gnarly and buzzing sound, its riffs are simple but effective and keeps your interest in place. Also quite heavy sometimes besides the death chugging.

I had a good time slicing through these three tracks over and over and the groove dont lose its appeal fast either which is a good sign.

Drums is a bit lower mixed but but just enough so the backbone rythm is keept intact and the vocals melds great with the overall package with its dry ghastly rasp.

It is just three songs so there is not so much to say besides that it is has an good grab on your neck and after listening to it you get interested for future releases from Vorus! (love the cover art!)

1. Chamber of Laments
2. Paradise is Burning
3. Where Misery Crawls

Moras - Manifest Death

There is always a good reason to linger forever in the shadows...

From Finland this entity Moras comes and with it harrowing skies that succumbs all light, ancient  dark woods are surrounding the sight and the only way left is to embrace it.

To be more technical in my description i would say it is a very melancholic raw mid to slow-temp black metal, a bit like early Drowning the Light. The actual compositions has a nice atmospheric melodic touch to them which is mixed just right in the raw production, vocals are shreiking around like a distressed spectre and underlines the message of death well. These 5 songs that are on this debut demo makes up for a good firm picture of this band has to offer and what its purpose is.

As a whole it has a great sinking feeling to it....like you are deep under the surface of common "normal" life. It is misanthropic and hateful but at the same time it has an almost "romatic" feel (not sound) to the darkness...like "yes i am dead to this world but i also know that this is my true place and therefore i feel at home."  And i can totally hang from that tree myself too so...hehe

Great debut demo that ticks my boxes and i look forward to future material from Moras.

The great Mexican label Svart Hat has the honor to release this tape so head on over there to snap up a copy for your self!

Waldschrat - Metropolis wird fallen

Finally the second full album from this Austrian horde is here! ...well i guess it was already out in May...whatever it is great to take a bite of fallen fruit.

Previous and first album came in 2013 and i remember i liked much and put the band on the Austrian BM-mapp for me, i also did an interview with them back then.

If you dont know about this band they play in a melancholic but grand black metal, the roots from their part of Europe is there as well inspiration from the Norwegian vein is found. What i like most about this release and well the bands musical style in general is their  rich compositions, the atmosphere and feelings run on more then one or two levels which gives it a deeper experience. They mixes cold black metal hate attacks and parts from the DSBM genre without falling into the traps that that genre has an abundance of. All sounds sincere (and quite intimate) and solid.

One thing that is worth mentioning is their intro which sets the focus clarely on todays society...and how it is rotting and decaying. The many reasons for this "state" is evident if you have open/critical eyes and ears. (sidenote but also connected rant: dont buy into this "false news" propaganda that the mainstream media is pooping out, sure be critical towards all "news" and use your own reasoning but  more real truth is found in the alternative media we all know that the mainstream is scripted to mold the people into brainless sheep.)

With this urban-sickness-intro they put their agenda and thoughts in the now which works fine with them..often i am too sick of this modern times i reach for music that lives more in the glorius ancient past but here i dont get turned off....I get engaged.

They describe this releases content like this "Seven stories about the end of Metropolis, the home of decadence and the circle of life and how everything is connected."...so i guess i took it the right way.

Production is clean but organic and well balanced, all the intracte  and well written songs (which has quite much variations in themselves) is brought forward to the listener in a powerfull punch. No doubt a good album.

So if you are looking for something that has both the introspective emotional focus as well as the aggressive extroverte fusion pick this up.

Best song for me is track 5, such a great song!

Liturgy of Desecration - And the Goat of Sodomy Commands...

As the great beast open its jaws a even greater ghastly howl is heard around the planet!
Here comes a new powerful beastial black metal band from Greece!

Besides the classical bloodthirsty tropes and tricks from this genere that is in place here this band conjures up some extra effectful dramaturgical atmospheres with its compositions &  intro and outros. Really sucking you in! ...no not a bj from that goat no...

In other words it has a very complete package and infuses enough personal touches and sentiments.

Its production is swampy & foggy and the guitars are chuggy and crushing like a two handed axe.
Drums is on constant killing mode and the vocals is like it comes from the  demonical goat lord thats on the cover art(art by me hehe)!
The six songs that is presented here is a perfect start for this band as each track shows what they are capable of... devestation that is....but with enough engaging compositions through out... so it wont just become flat and boring that some of bands in this genre can be.

Solid start from Liturgy of Desecration! Get it!

Totenwache - Ursprung

A new roar is heard in Germanys forests! A new horde is here to keep the ancient flame of black metal heritage burning.

Yes it is totally traditional mid-tempo cold harsh black metal, nothing new here but that is the point also as it flows in line with and continues the alternative dimensional time-line of second wave medieval black metal....yeah one can complain here and there on many bands that they dont have a purpose or push the envelope enough etc etc and sure it is early to see how strong black flame Totenwache has as this is their debut release only but these songs here have enough of solid compositions and correct atmosphere to have their place and spot in the long line of rustic black metal hordes.

The main quality points to speak about here besides the nice old forest wind is their good taste of timing and simple but effective compositions, it all flows well together and even under the 12 minutes song "Denial of Consciousness" they dont fall into boredome traps. Enough of solid guitar parts which leads most of the music as well as the vocals which is raspy and fitting, drums is also good, the band sounds tight playing.
Production is just as it should here, organic and balanced. not directly raw but good.

All in all this debut release is good, perhaps nothing extraordinary but a promising start that gives me hunger for more material.
To top it off the band logo is cool and cover art/layout is good also!

For our masters will!

Ruins of Unlight / Swine Soul - Two Tyrants of Terror

And down fell a burnt wing from an angel....then came a massive rain of blood and bodies.... the golden throne was empty.

From Narbentage Produktionen comes this split with Swine Soul which is a one man band from USA and  Ruins of Unlight (4 members) from Germany / Austria.

Swine Souls music emanates from a noise perspective but incorporates enough black metal parts to make it appeal to me, i for sure have nothing against bands to mix in all kind of electromagnetic darkness into black metal...it can have a powerful effect.
It sounds like a thick smog of dismay and pain. It is parts like a "wall of noise" but guitars shine through just enough to make you sit up and take notice....SS´s music has a quite wide range of ways to make his point...many layers of insanity molds into a dirty road that takes you to...............your destination.
It has a more surreal dream like state rather then "songs" so it is an acquired taste. It was effective and gave me new internal visions...and that never hurts when i am about to paint or create something.
Parts of it retains some of the ancient BM world sound but much of it also has an urban nightmare  vibe over it...

Both bands throws in a collaboration track in the midst of this split and it sounds great! It leans more towards pure black metal but i think the best of this song is its raw demonic energy. Could work as a new side project perhaps?

Ruins of Unlight brings forth a more traditional melancholic raw mid-tempo satanic metal, the mix is also quite heavy and choked and disted which work great as a backbone to the compositions, the raspy vocals are great and has some nice variations and it flows nicely together with the guitars, drums are drowned almost but the puls rytm from them  come through and fulfill its reason of existence.
For me this is the best side but i think both are strong in their own ways.

Winds from the ancient war blows over your soul, grand and strong it wander forward, through fire & ice.... song after song recreates this vision of heavy struggling.
I hope someday i will see a full length from Ruins of Unlight on vinyl.( the Burzum cover was nice also)

This split clocks in slightly over one whole hour so you get much pain and strife for your cash that is for sure!!

A good if a bit genre mixed split tape. (i am happy to have my artwork as the cover for this too hehe)

Nyctophilia / Nihil Invocation - Season of the Purest Decay

The putrid chamber doors open once again into Hateworks temple!

This time we are threatened with a split tape from two fairly new bands, the split starts off with  Nihil Invocation which is a one man band from the States and he delivers a bleak and slow paced puke of illness, a bit rough around the edges (technically speaking) but it goes well with the dead atmosphere though, the three songs here takes you to a place where a withering solitude is king and you is its bitch.
Raw and primitive, an interesting start....also NI has another release out this year called "Disease in Solitude"...dont know if it has a physical release though.

On the B-side we have the Polish one man band Nyctophilia.
This music continues with the utter bleakness and, these two bands fit very well together on this split for sure. Besides the similar atmospheres Nyctophilia plays a more solid and concentrated style and for me it is the side i resonate the most with. It has effective friction between vengeful raw  outbursts to the more calmer icy bits,  only two songs but i feel they give you enough of its bleeding persona & damaged soul to make it worthwile.
Nyctophilia also have released a Ep "Gdzie noc jest najczarniejsza"(dont ask me what that means..) & a full length this year called "Dwelling in the Fullmoon Light".

All in all a solid slab of raw misanthropic black metal. (that also make me want to hear more from both bands)

On a sidenote both the members of these bands have another band together called Baphometic Deathslaught with a fresh debut demo out now...digitally anyways.

Tracklist:
1.     Nihil Invocation - The Ceremonial Chambers of Perpetual Hate (Intro)     01:11       instrumental
2.     Nihil Invocation - A God Amongst Lethargy and Desolation     04:50

Lathspell - Torn Cold Void

After enjoying their previous album "Impious Incantations" in 2014 my appetite for more Lathspell was ignited! Sure that album was already their fourth one (and not counting the demos and splits) so i was already seriously  behind....but better late then never they say. (who?     .............they.)

The music you get here is some smokey black (well written) shards of darkness, it shimmers and reflects both internal and external apocalyptic longings and strife.... it mixes greatly both aggressive blast attacks with somber melodic hymns that both caress and chokes, the mixing & production is strong, punchy and organic. An all engulfing experience!

Also i find it has a quite grown up vibe to it, a sophistication (both in composition and atmosphere) that runs like a river of blood through out the album...

Long songs is not uncommon in black metal of course but these four ones infuses a perfectly balanced blend of memorable guitar compositions, harsh and bleeding vocals and punishing drums....and some well used bass parts. Never a dull moment in other words.

All in all this release has nothing i can nit pick on really it is just a great album...certainly one of 2016 top creations.

Huoripukki - Barbaria.nyt

Last year this first EP from Huoripukki (means whoremonger in Finnish) got out from the dusty chambers, previously they had released a string of (four) demos between 2008 and 2010 but non i have heard though so this tape is the first assult i hear from them....first reason really i got interested in them was their messy but charmingly cool band logo hehe....

They play in a dusty quite slow barbaric death metal but with some inspirations from other generes like Thrash and heavy metal i think but these are morphed into the whole very nicely.
They sound pretty much as the cover looks like (the artwork reminds me of the art from the artist Warhead...) blunt and unforgiving. Guitars chuggs along the thumping drums but it also lash out a solo here and there for good measure.Vocals is dry and foggy and encapsules the atmosphere with dread and strengths.

From start to finish you get a heavy and meaty experience...sounds like a good old medieval Rape, pillage and plunder sound track!

I like the bands overall sound as it both stands on its own with its barbaric battlefield beats and embraces its traditional primitive death metal roots.... they have already this year released a new demo called Nekala Dungeons '17 but what i really look forward to is a full album from them where they could bump up the barbaric feel and dramatize it even more because there is much potential here to explore deeper.

Bloodlust - At the Devil's Left Hand

The second album is on the horizon (release in the end of August) from this Australian Blackened Thrash metal band, first album "Cultus Diaboli" fro 2015 was great and was my eye opener for the band. So when i got the news that a new full album was on its way i naturally got exicited.

So here we have been given a teaser track which is also the title track, it sounds as great as one could hope for.How it sounds? Like hungry demons riding the brimstone horses down the graveyard path! A pleasure in hell for sure!
Some new musical and vocal ideas is heard in this song besides the solid but classical style... i for one will pick this up anyways when its released from the burning crypt!
 A fast devilry attack!

And also i hope for a vinyl (cd and tape for now) in the future as i dig the cool cover artwork by  César Valladares....i want it biiig! hehe

Solum - Enthrall

Suddenly i got a cd in my snail mailbox, a very kind gesture from a Fb friend (thanks Zunko!) that thought i should give it a listen... and i did and it is actually a pretty good debut release from this Australian band.

....My first impression (before i heard any of the music) was quite low due to the overall aesthetics as it looks like an uninspired average black metal band with a DSBM appreciation....then i look inside on the member photo and i got slightly confused...two of the members have knee long shorts and THAT makes me think of American death metal haha yeah i know i´m being  superficial now but that what came into my mind.

So with a tilted brain i started to listen and the say first minute or two it sounds like a typical start for an DSBM record with the rain effects and calm & moody guitar picking away until some man starts wishpering & talking in autistic way...but then things start to improve drastically! next minute has the cold sharp black metal riffings soo ok so far its blackish metal but the vocals sounds quite intense and just very good!

Suddenly the band blast off into death metal territory! I knew it i said to myself!
Those shorts means death! haha That aside the death here is played very meaty and hard, sounds great i think both the delivery from the members to the production, clean but very crunchy! (yeah their sound is not "old school" as in muddy, dirty lo-fi monster style but a more "proper studio" style but in a nice effective way)  From mid-slow to mid-fast they slay from song to song! It has also some nice bleak atmosphere that complete the package....

They should have no problems to get signed to some label with this kind of release, i could see them fit well into Lavadome Productions rooster for an example.
The only thing i would recommend to change is the confusing visuals of the product, i think the people that like to listen to this the most would not get curious by the way the cover/logo/fonts look now.

If you like to listen to death metal with some slashes of black aura and also being "well produced" give this a go!
 I did not regret it.

Track list:

1.     Purification of Fire     06:02
2.     Tomb of Black Mist     03:03
3.     Sex Song     05:04
4.     Enthrall of Evil     04:55
      Total: 19:04

...oh! In the start of track three does he sing/scream: Dustbin!!! Dustbin soul!   ?   hehe probably not.

Ghaisiuan - Neverending Knife in The Mind

Yeah i feel that knife alright! hehe

This is demo compilation from the USA-based artist/artists from the raw/atmospheric band Ghaisiuan. First time for me hearing them so i had no big clue to what to really expect but as it was Hateworks that released this i was quite positive about liking it.

Their sound is raw yes but the songs sound and flow is almost like some harsh spectral filled storm, it almost feels like all tracks is bound together in a great dark flow and not like separate tracks...guitar is steely sharp and dominant and the vocals rasps and screams around in the foggy night sky. It  is a very consuming downward spiral of audial attacks.
The production is raw and on the verge of over powering...cracks and dust ignite and electricity is not far from popping out from the speakers.

The overall sound is oppressive and negative.

Some parts is manic like running blind in a corridor filled with broken glass, other parts feels detached and cold. A nice complete package if you are after this type of primitive suffering....dont come here and look for nice empowering grand compositions.

Besides the primitive raw style and sound their style/sound is keept well together which is a good thing....a bit into the tape there is a riff that sound very alike the main theme of Terminator 2 hehe even if it was not on purpose it was a neat touch...ah and also the cardboard tape box was neat!

Wulfheim - Abomination

Some years ago i reviewed Wulfheims (Spain) third album "Alsvart" and liked it pretty much...time went on and suddenly i noticed a new album had been released so naturally i had to check it out!

Funny thing is after the dark sinister intro track here on "Abomination" when the first actual song started i thought there was something wrong with my headphones or that the contact was not really put in....i did not hear any bass...the sound that hit me was like a furious thin dishwasher swirl sound! Once i realized that the sound was sounding like it was meant to (no broken headphones etc) i could settle down and give it a proper listen haha.

The good thing is that after some tracks (which all has a similar type of production sound and delivery) when you get used to this peculiar type of sound-mix  you find some nice maniac blistering black metal! It is really a over-the-top attack!

Yeah i actually even like this album better then the last one (which has a similar digital high pitch swishing style, programmed drum?) as it take this style a step further both in intensity and in compositions, in other words he has honed his skills.
I like all the little musical stuff he puts in here and there through the steely storms as they enriches the whole experience.
First you will think WTF! haha but give it some songs and you´ll hear whats really in store.  I cant really compare Wulfheims sound to any other acts out there (soundwise)... i guess there is some bands similar but i must have missed them. Either way if you are looking for a medieval thunderstorm this can do the trick!

The only thing i would have done considering its relentless speed and attack on all tracks (not counting the outro/intro/interludes which helps though the albums structure) i would have picked off 2-3 tracks to keep the running time shorter, for me at least it would helped my brain not to boil over hehe. It is a bit of an over kill.

What ever you think after reading this review i feel its totally worth checking this album out.

Varulv - Sagenlieder

Last time i heard something from this Austrian horde was their great second album "Wolfszorn" so coming from from that release i had pretty high expectations for this third full length.

I was not dissapointed luckily!
The band (which is only 2 members now?) continues to play in their traditional way combining icy middle fast - middle slow second wave black metal (with a clear early Norwegian influence with some hints of pagan here and there) but this time around compared to the previous one they have toned down the aggression (both in speed and production) and have a more heavy focus on cold sombre landscapes.

For me one of the high points of last album was just their aggressive attack mixed with their grand but bleak guitar compositions so first i was a little put back listening to this new record....but after the third and forth spin it was no longer a problem for me as the actual music popped up & became clear for me, as i said this album has a more subdued tone and it almost feels like the members has some extra weight on their shoulders in real life...i might be wrong but that is the feeling i get....either way it is a positive thing to me as it feels more real, more flesh and bones to gnaw on.

Even though it has an overall a downbeat atmosphear their old grand and ancient tunes comes through and in the end the experience here is a worthwhile one to take, the cold forest and mountains on the cover (and through the whole production design) resonates exactly what you hear so thats perfect.

As i cant speak or read any of their language i cant really comment on lyrics but from the little i got out from some research i think at least some of the songs is based on old poetic texts etc which is nice and fits Varulvs image greatly.

My personal favorite tracks is 5,6,7, first two is in the long and slower epic style but with some nice and extra effective guitar compositions and the third one is the best up tempo attack song on this release, good bloody stuff! ah and the production is well rounded evenly mixed but not too polished.

 (bone not included)

So all in all it is a solid album (that builds up through repeated listenings) that is worth checking out! And for the already fans of Varulv there should be no stopping you to buy it!
